Last weekend Andrew Ford and myself went with Boise State's ROTC program to cover their fall training. It was a two day camp out in Idaho City so we just went ahead and flew the blackhawks out there to save some time. For those of you that follow the blog might remember the "List of things for 2009" (HERE)

I will do a full recap at the end of the year for progress but this weekend knocked two out. Multimedia and a helicopter ride. It was a good trip but I also worked my butt off keeping up with these guys.

This is my blog so I can say what I want but there were a few things said that pissed me off a bit and reminded me why I'm not in the service.

This comes at day two at about 6am from one of the colonels.

ME-Blue COLONEL-Red

"Bet you would love a latte right now"

"Eh... coffee yes but not a latte"

"Weird...I would have thought you were a latte boy"

"Why is that?"

"Well I mean you have purple polo glasses on"

"Nope just black coffee for me"

"Hmmmm"

This is a 50 year old man telling me this. Next up we have another 50 something colonel with the punch line. One guy throws a paintball at me and it just bounced off so I pick it back up and throw it at him. Camera in hand and I miss. This tuff guy proceeds to say "Must not have played much ball with your dad growing up... ha?"

Who the hell are you to critique how good of a father he has been. I wouldn't have been raised any different then I was. My Dad was more then willing to drive me all over the country to race bikes and I got pretty good at it. So if you think throwing a ball is how you measure being there for your son then he fails but If you look at everything that man has done for me... he is twice the man then yourself. He has taught me so many lessons and let me figure plenty out on my own. Gave me tools to succeed in life. I don't know what kind of relationship you might have with your son/kids and nor do I care for the same reason you should stay out of my business.

There. I feel better about that now.

I do want to give a big thanks to everyone that did help during that training. I met some great people that will and have done great things for our country and I am very thankful of that.

I love the color of the hat, the shirt and the wall. It just came together for this one. The second photo shows where my light was coming from. These ones didn't run but I was still sold on them.

MJ died and someone in Spokane did this.
Here are a few photos from a band that my friends are in together. I lived with the back three guys for a bit. They are all great guys and heck they can even make some good tunes.

It's what I used to write this blog post. I wish I had some behind the scenes photos because this was a very low budget. Thanks to my Dad and Nik for being my light stands. I will post the photos from their practice that I shot. They had a real nice raw feel to them. Just the way photos should be.

I said I was never going to start a post off like this but I feel like I have let you (readers) down. Its been like 5 weeks. For one year I hadn't gone longer then 2 weeks between post and I failed. I shot more then I ever have this summer and I couldn't get you one darn post. Lame on my part. I would even be willing to say WAY lame on my part.

I'll get all caught back up and get some content rolling through here. Lets see...

-I moved to Boise for school.

-Had a great time with the internship this summer at The Inlander.

-Bought Glandberg.com (more to come)

-Didn't go on one trip this whole summer.

-Miss CDA and MO (LOTS)

-Haven't driven a car in 2 weeks

Its hard to leave a place you love. I like it here in Boise but its still not the dream place. Miss drip with Josh and beers with Bill. Miss capturing with Campbell and insight with Inlander.

The bed in the basement even sounds good.

Ill do some more photo posts real soon but I had to get something out there just to blow the dust off this thing. The photo that I did post on here was for a triathlon preview story, shot for The Inlander. Ironman for you CDA people.

This might have some similarities to my post about Wendy's a few months ago. Side note: I have gone back and I don't know if they got the memo or not but you better believe I get all the free honey mustard I want.

Down to business. I love to shop local. At any opportunity I will choose local over corporate. You just get better customer service and you keep your money local. Or do you? There is only one small camera store in Coeur d'Alene and what do you know, I like cameras. Sounds like a perfect fit for me to shop at this place. WRONG. Link (here)

I love the shop. Great feel to it and they have a little bit of everything. The owner (Dan) is a great guy and always full of info. Mike is the man and can answer any question with some humor thrown in there also but the problem shows itself when i have to deal with Chic. I bet I have gone into Camera Corral 20-30 times in my years here and he has talked down to me every time. I'm in there to get help or ask about something so HELP ME.

So I go in there today to ask for some info on the different types of film and the characteristics of each kind. I must have woke him or interrupted his solitaire game but he wouldnt leave the computer for the life of him. I have a pocket full of money and I wanted to give it to you if you could tell me something about this film. All I got was "that one is black and white." Ummm no kidding I can read it. How about things like "geee Glenn, this one has great skin tones and is a great one for shooting in the summer." Thats all I want to know and from the looks of their website I was talking to the right guy.

Stuff like that kills me. Here is another gem: I went in another time and asked some question about flashes. "What the hell do you need flashes for? You just need to know how to use natural light." Maybe we should ask flash master, Joe McNally why he uses them. Just read (here) if you need reassurance about his credibility. Here is a post he did last week on his blog

He used 347 flashes on this one. What if Joe walked into Camera Corral and had asked about a flash and got that answer he gave me? Might cost him right around $173,500. I have 3 and they run $500 a piece and after this conversation with Chic I took all that money elsewhere. We all get it you are a GREAT photographer but thats not your job. SELL ME GEAR and today all you had to do was sell me a $3.50 roll of film. I dont think I'm the best by any means but I know my way around a camera and the industry for that matter so I don't want to and wont be treated like some punk kid. One sour grape can ruin a whole barrel.

First off I have to say that the guy next to me at the coffee shop (java) seems like he is about to punch his computer. I dont think I have ever seen someone work so hard at computing. Now on to my post. On Tuesday I went with Brady over to Spokane for a model shoot with some other photographers. I would say 7 photogs and 8 or so models and everyone just rotated around. This was not my normal gig. For those of you that know me wouldnt think i would be there shooting. I was a nice change of pace and I had a good time. I treated it as an assignment and shot it more photo-j style then fashion. I was more the assistant for Brady but did my fair share of shooting. Here are some of our images from the day. I have so many photos that i need to get up here also. I dont know what my photo count is for the summer so far but it has to be up around 2000 or so. Still feels like photography is the place to be and I'm sure not getting board of it. Hope that never happens.

You would think that the more you shoot the more you will post. Not so much in my case. I would say that I have never shot so much in one month and look here... no new photos. Working with The Inlander this summer has been great. I need an assignment to do my best work and before I got on with them I was a little worried that I wouldnt shoot to much personal work this summer but I'm staying plenty busy. I dont have time to post all the photos this morning but I'm working them up and the next few will be loaded with them. Hang in there a few days and check back. It will get better.

About a month ago Nik got a real small video camera (Kodak ZX1) and we have brought that thing everywhere. It is the perfect little camera to bring around and shoot just life. The best camera is the one with you. We have been riding lots the last few weeks and filming a bit. By the end of the summer we would like to have a decent length little film summing up the summer and riding in North Idaho. I want to shoot more of these photos also. Something that shows North Idaho and what we do here. Keep your eyes open for more of this stuff to come.

This one packs a punch also. We have T.R. and Lexi here. Shot at our newspaper softball/bbq day. Advisor and the Editor and Chief. Thank you for everything. They are the reason I came out there and did lots for all of us.
I cant for the life of me shoot bands or ball sports. Just not my thing. Someday I will figure it out but for now... not my thing. If you know these boys then you can just hear "Wagon Wheel" playing when you look at this photo. This band is no more but they sure know how to play. Frontman Zack is one of the most legit guys ever. Good luck in Zion.

LONGEST ROLL EVER.

I have to come up with a better way to start posts. This one was about to start the same as all the others. The roll of film I just got developed took forever to shoot. I don't know what the deal was but it it was the longest 15 frames ever. There are a few from Chicago and the rest from this spring in Joplin. The film was 400 iso tri-x. I dont know if its my favorite. The camera shop in Joplin only had that for black and white but a few shots it gave me some different effects. Almost and inferred feel. I'm going back to 100 t-max. Now that is film from God himself. I dont know If you guys like the small write up about each photo so maybe some feedback would help me out.
Real cool Jewish diner downtown Chicago. This was also featured in the cake and soup video. A bit expensive but a fun place.
Skyline. This city had plenty of tall buildings. The big park gave it a great break form all the business bustle.
Colby, I'm sorry for this photo but I love it. That bean and your head go together perfectly. The look on his face is priceless.
Had to have some deep dish. "When in Rome," you get the point. One slice is a full meal and a sure bet on a belly ache.

The Great North.

It has been just about two weeks since my move back to Idaho. Sure feels good to be back but I'm missing things already. I don't know what happen to me over the last few months but I have just been called to be outside and soak up some Mother Nature. Sure we have big mountains in Idaho but every place has its own unique geography.

I don't think I need to become like this:

But I feel more pull day by day to do more things in my life. This is bar none THE BEST MOVIE EVER and its a true story. Anyway, I'm on a nature bender and what better place to do it then North Idaho. You sure can take it for granted when you don't have all this at your finger tips. Here are a few shots I have gathered over the last few days.

My father and I went fishing last night on Hayden Lake. This was one of the closing shots as the sun was going down. This lure (red devil lucky pants) caught 50-60 fish that afternoon. Don't ask about the name... I don't know what it means either.
This would be one of the better Bass we caught that night. Had a great time out on the lake with my dad. Life seems to sure slow down out there. No cell phone and that helps.

I have to give Nik some credit for holding the wheel for me on this shot. This was driving up Highway 95 with the Salmon River off to the left. Feels like I drove a million miles over the past few weeks but when it looks like this you don't mind all that much.

Shut off your cell phone this weekend for a few hours and soak up some Mother Nature around you. You are missing out.

Dear Missouri

Just right. That’s how I would sum up my time here.

Let me give you a little background. March of 2008 I got to talking with my friend Andrew, fellow editor at The Sentinel, about maybe it was time for something new. We were both on our second year at a two-year school with no graduation in the near future. Many stay and finish, then go on to a university but not us. Kind of a dumb choice but we went for it. Nils, the advisor for the newspaper at North Idaho College, hooked us up with some contacts here in Missouri. There has been a long line of transfers between the schools and we would soon be part of that trend. We were both offered full tuition scholarships to come to MSSU (Missouri Southern State University) to work on the newspaper. I would come in as Director of Photography and Andrew would be the News Editor.

In April we came to check it out. You know, get a feel for it. Peep the stats as some would say. We flew into Tulsa. FLATTEST PLACE IN THE WORLD. It was kind of a shock for a kid that grew up in North Idaho. It wasn’t love at first sight but I figured that I could live here for a few years. It was worth it due to the deal on school.

So come July I would pack it all up. I put my life in a wagon and headed east. We had a real great bbq the night before we left. I don’t know if that made it harder or put myself at ease about it all. I don’t know how many people showed up but there were the best of the best there. It felt like everyone from over the years stopped in. If you are reading this and you live in North Idaho and you didn’t come… I shall remember that. Just kidding… kind of.

One of the first struggles that I had was the feeling of community. I had just come from living in a town that was centered on the local downtown scene. Most days I didn’t even need my phone to plan a hang out with friends. I knew where they were and they knew where I was going to be. The longer I was here the better this got. Once school started I met Colby Williams. Was it one of the best things to happen to me out there? For sure. The guy was genuine and there for you. Colby also was friends with everyone in town and put me right in the middle of one of the best groups of people. I cant name everyone but you know who you are. A big thank you to everyone that leaned my name. I think that if we were on a name-to-name level then you made a big impact.

Nothing against people back home or any place else I have been but the Midwest crowd are the nicest people I have ever come across. I wouldn’t call it “southern hospitality” but it has somewhat of that feel. They will just take you under their wing and show you the time of your life. I felt like I have done it all out here.

Most of all, I learned more about Glenn Landberg. I don’t think that I’m a different person now but I found out what is most important to me. I was pushed. New place, no friends, no family and I made it. I love knowing that I can pack up and move anywhere I want and make it. I can start a new life in a new place. I’m sure I left plenty of stuff of that list but you get the point and you read the blog, so you have a pretty good idea of my world out here.

Well Missouri… we had our ups and downs. I wouldn’t take this back for anything and yet I think its time to turn the page. It’s on to the next chapter in the book. I wont forget you or anyone in this state or the times we had. I’m sad that I am about to leave. Real sad. I think its safe to say, “I LOVE MISSOURI.”

I’ll miss you.

About a month ago I was on craigslist just looking around and came across a listing for summer interns at The Inlander. Its a paper for the inland northwest area and is a free paper. They cover lots of outdoorsy events, food, music and festivals. My favorite local publication by far. I went ahead and sent in my cover letter and resume along with a link to my portfolio. Guess what... I got an email back saying that I didn't get the position because it has already been filled. I was bummed but nothing I could do. Wrong. Sometimes sitting around pays off. A few weeks had gone by and then I got a call from a random 509 number. They had called to see if I was still interested and when I could come by to get my first trial assignment. I'm real pumped about this and it should be good real world experience in the journalism world.

Hang it up.

Selling a print in a gallery was something that was on my list of things to do in 2009.(HERE)

At the time I knew no one that owned a gallery or anything about them. I just figured that my photos were destined for newsprint, then died. A few of my favorites might make it to the blog but for the most part the sit on these hard drives in front of me. But I shoot so that I can stay up all night and look at 1000's of photos from all over the place with a cluster of people. That might be one of my favorite things to do. Just to get lost in summers past.

Lets start you out with this.

It was an act of God but there I was, just sitting at home one Sunday night about three or four weeks ago when something in me said "Go to Starbuck." so I got in the car and went. I sat down with my coffee and in walks Jeff Youngblood. This is a guy I met once or twice but didn't really know him. He walked up to me and said, "Your a photographer, right?"

So we got to talking and he was starting a gallery in downtown Joplin and wanted to have me be one of the artists in the opening show. Remembering back to my list, I said yes.

It is a show of four photographers. The whole process has been real fun, trying to figure out what photos to pick, getting them printed and now they are at the frame shop. I would like to show you the pictures that made the cut but I don't want to spoil the show for the locals. I will take lots of photos of the opening for those of you that cant make it. It will be a stop on the "art walk" here in Joplin and is expected to have well over 400 people roll through opening night.

I would love to see you all out there. I'm real happy about this and it feels like I'm moving in the right direction. Keep things clicking in life. Take the blinders off and who knows there you will end up.

I wish I could call it a tornado but I don't think I can. At 7:15 or so I woke up with some crazy wind whippin at the house. Everyone here talks about green skies when there is a tornado and it was plenty green this morning. I ran downstairs and andrew woke up also. So we just sat in the living room watching outside. At about 8:30 we lost power and by 9 the tornado sirens started sounding. We figured that our house may not be the best shape for a "nado" so we headed to the neighbors. Knock knock..... knock knock.... nothing so run to the other neighbors. Same story there. So we just sat in our place, keeping fingers crossed. Wind got up over 85 mph and with wind and hail, tons of windows broke. Not in our place but all over town.

Just a little over 8 months and we arrive at post number 50. It hasn't been the most exciting 8 months of reading I'm sure but I have done my best to keep all the readers around. Thank you everyone that has been to the blog and I would hope that you keep coming back. The blog has had much more traffic and success.

This is a photo that I shot a few days ago at the MSSU spring football game. Those of you that know me, know that i have a problem (aka don't know how) to shoot sports. So when I go to a game this is what I come back with. I'm a big fan of good lines in a photo and these gentleman set it up just right for me. There was one more ref there but I hid him behind the middle guy. It just got too busy and he wasn't fitting in the spot to the left. Anyway, I'm a fan of this photo.

One more thing. Ron Paul is the man. Yesterday I was thinking about the Swine Flu. Is this something I should worry about? When do I get a mask? Someone in Kansas has it, so its in my backyard. I was making my nightly rounds to a few favorite websites and Ron Paul posted this bad boy.

There, now we can all sleep tonight. Wash your hands and don't go to Mexico.

At the end of the school year it is award time for the newspapers. I am not an award chaser nor do i think that it what we (journalists) should be striving for. We should give it 100% all the time and if you end up with one then great. Last weekend was the Missouri College Media Association convention in St. Louis.

This is an exert from a note that the newspaper adviser, T.R. Hanrahan, wrote summing it all up.

The Chart staff acquitted itself very well at this year's Missouri College Media Association convention in ways tangible and intangible.
The Chart brought home 19 awards including first-place honors in investigative reporting, editorial cartooning, editorial/oped section, feature page and multimedia.

Here are a few photos that I shot for the Chart this weekend. The tattooer is a MSSU alumni and we did a story on him. These photos were not so good in color but in b&w... I'm happy with them.

It sure feels like the days between the posts just sneak right up on you. I'm not a fan of talking about posting more but I need to get back on it. It is no way to treat the faithful.

For the last week or so it just feels like everything is clicking. I don't know if you ever go though these times. Just having life start to fall into place is what I'm talking about. I will have to give you more news as things start to finalize. Nothing huge but just some fun stuff. Sometimes its having days where you feel like a well-oiled machine. Not a robot but just that you are doing what you should be doing and have things going in the right direction.

My parents will be coming into town tomorrow night to spend a few days in Middle America. It will be nice to have them around and see my world. My Dad and I will be hitting the lake to do some fishing on Friday.

I would Like to start off this post with this:

I will never set foot in Wendy's again. It might have been just how the grumpy 40 year old women that "serverd me" or lack of service, that really set me off. So I'm like super hungry and driving home, why not pull in and get a few items? Sounded good to me. I did drive-though. So I order a few hamburgers, chicken sandwich and some fries. I'm a big fan of honey mustard almost to the extent of those kids that put ranch on everything. Anyway, I just want some HM to put on my...you know what... It doesn't matter. I just wanted it.

Glenn- "Could I get some HM also?"
40 y.o. - "Did you get chicken nuggets?"
Glenn- "NOPE"
40 y.o. - "Well then you are going to have to pay for it."

I will not pay for HM at some fast food place. It just drives me nuts to even think about it. I hate corporate BS. I'm sure some stuff-shirt at HQ made this decision and heck I bet he would never even eat at Wendy's with his salary. So, I'm done. I will never go back and I would like you to consider the same.

Chicago Photos

There are 2 more movies from the trip being uploaded as we speak but our neighbors Internet is being plenty slow today. Can I complain about that? Anyway, I shot the trip half color half B&W. So for now all I have is the color stuff back. It was somewhat overcast and gray days for our trip and it is reflected in the photos. There are a few keepers that I like but I didn't hold the sky as well as I normally like to.
This first one is my favorite. There were tons of people around this thing and I just couldn't figure out how to shoot it. When I first walked up to it there was a very small Asian child that walked up to it and touched it then looked back to his father. That was my shot but I had the camera strap on and couldn't pull up in time. So I got this one instead. Still happy. The guy in the back is the deal sealer for me and the shadow off to the left.
Newspapers and banks are both in a world of hurt right now. I'm not so happy about how the economy is doing and what we are doing to help it. Back the buck with gold and don't live beyond your means.
The sun was coming in and hitting those buildings with just perfect golden light. Didn't show up in the photo so well. If you shoot film or have some suggestions please let me know. Different type of film? exposure? post? For the non photo people out there, this one gives you a feel of just how big this city is. I love big cities but this place is a monster. There must have been 1000 skyscrapers there. What I did love was all the old building and the history there. Well everything that was left after the "Great Chicago Fire" in 1871.

We first met April 2007 in Moab, Utah on a mountain bike trip. From that day on we have traveled everywhere together. Those of you that know me, know how big of a deal this is. I must have ran 1000 cups though the walls of that mug in its time of service. I take my own cup to coffee shops for three reasons. First, to save money. If you bring your own mug to any coffee shop they will 9/10 times give you a cup discount. Second, I drink enough of the stuff that it saves on paper. One more tree. Third reason, it just tastes better. sometime the coffee takes on a bit of a paper taste but with ceramic its all natural. The last brew was Clover so at least it went out right. It will not be replaced easily.

I just had to post from the road. I'm sitting in a super huge bus that just left St. Louis and rolled into Illinois. (leave the S off when you say it)

We left J-Town at 1pm and headed to Kansas City. It takes me a good 3 hours to drive it but Colby got us there in a little over 2. Must be nice to do that all the time. We had a little time to kill so we went to a cool little coffee shop and they just so happen to have a Clover. We parked the car at my Texas friends house (Cody and Sarah) and we went to dinner then they dropped us off at the bus stop. Big shout out to them, thank you guys for everything you have done for me. Great people in Middle America.

we got on at 8:30pm and we get there at 6:00 am. Just 4 more hours to go. I will get some videos and photos up tomorrow at some point.

Spring Break (Chicago)

Not my photos

Tomorrow, Colby and I will be heading up to Kansas City to climb aboard THE MEGA BUS. A few months ago when I was in St. Louis, a girl that worked at The City Museum had mentions that the only way to travel in the Midwest was via Mega Bus. I didn't think about it till a couple months ago when a few friends and I were talking about what to do for spring break. So I said "got to see Chicago and we should let someone else drive." It might not have been just like that but something close. So I started to play around with dates and it looked like it was only going to be like $12 each way.

Kansas City to Chicago
559 mi – about 8 hours 47 mins

Joplin to Chicago
707 mi – about 11 hours 33 mins

The closest bus stop in in KC so we have to drive there to get out but still $12 each way. It gets better because I was looking around a little more and found some promotional codes and it took it to $8.50 round trip. Perfect for a poor freelance collage student. The buses have free wifi and T.V. in every seat. Just take a look at this bad boy.

I will keep the blog updated the whole trip. I kind of want it to be a multimedia trip. I need to integrate more of it in my everyday world. I'm Just taking the medium format camera so there wont be photos for a while but we will have Colby's point and shoot camera. So Keep checking in a bunch for the next week or so. It will be the next best thing to being with us.

Back to Missouri after a quick weekend trip back to the frozen tundra of Idaho. That place sure does know how to make some cold weather. I went just to do some work but I managed to sneak some fun in there also. I had a real nice trip. Got to see some friends and drink both kinds of brew. One of the best thing about going home is just running into people you know.

I was side shooting two wedding with Brady Campbell. Back to back weddings is almost photo suicide. Just drains your creativity especially with indoor wedding. I will update my portfolio and post a link soon.

I would hope that all of you are just fired up about something in your lives. As most of my friends know that for me its photography. Even more specifically its newspapers. I have never been more driven to do anything in my life then to become a photojournalist. I love news, current events and photographing, so would there be a better career for me then working for a major newspapers? Hell no would be the answer to that.

I have been 110% for the last 3 years of my life working toward achieving that. Can you imagine being in the position to see that everything you want as far as a job goes, a career, a passion just folding up before you can even get your foot in the door. That is like having to tell Tiger Woods, "sorry man, no more golf." Its all he knows, its all he is trained to do.

Had to see about a girl.

I went back over to the west side for a few days to visit Charlotte. It had been 5 months since we say each other last. I flew out of Kansas City, Wednesday night and got home late Monday night. Its a 3 hour drive to K.C. from my place and its the closest airport that is reasonably priced so its just what you have to do.

I didn't shoot much in Portland because I think that you can kill a good thing with a camera. I'm sure you have all been on that trip when someone/yourself are more worried about getting pictures of the trip and people on it that they forget to actually enjoy the trip for themselves. The only memory they have is of them taking pictures. So there is a fine line and this was a trip I wanted to just enjoy...and enjoy we did.

Second night there we whipped this bad boy up:

That's right. Nothing like a great home cooked meal. It was just the perfect meal and time spent together. I did shoot some film so there will be some more to come. If you cant tell... I like this girl a bunch. I'm a lucky one. I didn't want to be too sappy so here is some more post.

Next Thurs I will be back in Idaho to shoot a few weddings and some senior pics. Kind of a business trip but I'm sure I will sneak in some time for both kinds of brew with friends and family. I get back Sunday afternoon and the 7 days till my next big trip. I think It will be the trip of all trips. Some of you know but I want to keep it down low and then just dedicate a whole blog post or 5 to it.

One last thing.

I shot some photos of Sarah Dunn (local country singer) for the Joplin Globe a while back but she just send me an email saying that she has a video up on a network website. To make it to the air she needs lots of views. So take 3 mins and watch it. (here) Thanks.

Tornado?

The weather Here in Missouri always keeps you guessing. It was 73 today and next thing you know we have tornado and flash flood warnings. I'm not scared only due to the fact that I'm sitting at S-bux and all the locals are just going about things as normal. I just thought that it was a bit weird that there is that threat lurking. I don't know how many time I have said "I never would have thought..." since I have been here in the mid west.

For those of you that don't know. I'm an only child so say what you want about me getting what I want but its not like that but my mother did send a little care package to me for V-day. Just an excuse to get some bagels out my way. I don't know if they don't know how to put bread in a circle out here or what but no bagels. So I decided to make up some dinner. Way too good. Somewhat of a flavor explosion. BIG DEAL FOR ME. This would be the everything bagel with ground turkey, fresh spinach, cheese and mayo. Tell your Mom Happy Valentine's Day also.

My buddy Tim, from North Idaho, is killing it with the blog right now and I wanted to tell you to go take a look and what he has going. It just gets better with every post also. Check in with him from time to time. (HERE)

I have to first tease to this. I entered a few photos in a local photo contest. The boys over at ColbyintheRaw are great. Anyway, they just posted the results and it looks like... (click here to find out)

So I'm a little low on money right now but I can still find a few bucks to keep my love for film going. It's just leaps and bounds better then digital. I finally shot my last roll of black and white for a while also. It is great to shoot and has a feel to it that's for sure but I'm ready for some color.

(It cost $10 to get the film done and I won $10. Love how that works)

I don't know if they will speak so loud to you but these might be some of my best photos I have made to date. I was there so I have feelings attached with them but I'm all about these. It was a fun little series. I guess this is what happens when you don't get to shoot for the chart.

I am in love with this photo. Not much more I can say. I'm proud of it. I feel like you can just put yourself in that guy's (Steve) shoes.

I have started to shoot more strait on and I have been happy with the out come. Keeps things simple. I don't think you can go wrong with a nice simple photo to tell the story.

It was $1 bowling night so there was a big group of us. I think there was something wrong with my ball being that I couldn't break 100. I wont quit my day job. Joke, what job?

These next 2 didn't make the cut for the top 3. Just had too much going on.

Art walk in Springfield this weekend. Means good art and good coffee. Cheers to that.

Winter again.

After that quick blast of heat we dropped right into a deep freeze (no school for two days). I don't have any photos yet. I shot some film of it so maybe in a few days. I went to cover a basketball game the other day at school because I forgot to assign it out to anyone. When I got there two of my photographers were shooting. I'm a poor sports shooter at best and I need to get better but I love stuff like this way more.

This is my friend Colby. He just got a job working with developmentally disabled kids and adults. This is Nicky hanging out at the southern game. Its great to see people working jobs that give back. I mean he went from serving $10 venti lattes to serving someone who needs it.

I'm sure that I am making a bigger deal out of it that it is but it was a heck of a nice day. Windows down driving around hit the spot. I didn't even need any kind of jacket or hat today. Yesterday was around 40 and then today she jumped right up to like 75 or something crazy like that. Its JAN 22 mind you. Saturday will be a high of 26 so its not like Missouri is in the thaw but we had one day.

It was nice to just hang out. Kicking back and have a beer with my roommate on the porch never felt so good. This is the thermometer that we got from an estate sale. The said "major life change" but we knew what that meant. His legacy lives on though our scale, dish dryer, fedora...

I don't know quite how accurate it is but I would trust it with 5 degree buffer. I also blew the dust off my 18-55 and put on a macro filter that i had in a drawer. I know its not great but I think it will stay with me for the 3 times a year that you need a macro shot. Nothing like making due with what you got.

With it being warm, I just wanted to try some new stuff. So I figured this would be a good idea. Wrong. I'm not super happy with it and it took forever to edit (I hate to edit). I want to do some more of these and maybe I will get the hang of it. For now you get to see the nice day and the A-frame over and over again.

Yesterday, Andrew and I went to Springfield, MO. I Had a job interview over there but equally as important was to enjoy my first Clover cup of coffee. I had heard that there was a place downtown that had one of these machines. You will have to read up on it to really get the idea of how big of a deal these things are.

With a price tag right around $11,000 for this coffee pot, it must be doing something right. There are 250 worldwide. Starbucks bought Clover a little less then a year ago. Luckily our local one is not located in one. The Coffee Ethic had to be one of the best coffee shops I have been in.

Getting to the point:

I love coffee and I drink plenty of it. I switched over to just black coffee a few years ago. I'm not a big fan of using creamers and sweeteners just because I just like to see how the coffee actually tastes (good or bad). The Clover cup might have had a bit of a placebo effect to it but it was still by far the best cup of brewed coffee I have ever enjoyed. It was a little thicker and so smooth. GO GET A CUP and see for yourself. I give it two thumbs up.

I shot a 220 roll though my medium format over Christmas break. Here are some of the images. It was real old film so it has a very old feel to most of it.

This is Nik's sister's kid. Miley. We got along pretty well and its the first baby that I have ever held. I'm an only child so never had a kid around the house and most of my family lives on the east cost which set you up for being 21 and holding your first baby.
One of my first nights in town me and some of the guys did some late night drip session and Denny's.
I went to Kansas City last weekend and stayed at my new friend's house. Sarah and Cody have 6 dogs running around this house and they pull back the curtains so they can look out all day.
This one has home written all over it for me. This is my Dad applying a camouflage cover on a gun. The fire place is cranking out the heat also. This one would be my favorite out of the roll.
I don't think that this does the snow load any justice but the light was just right so I had to take it. I couldn't get a shot that really showed just how much snow was in North Idaho. Its just memories now I guess. This is the back part of my parents property.

I have more and I'll post them later.

2009 is a year of... who knows.

I think that I have already put too much thought into this post and I haven't even started it yet. I feel that the blog post for the new year should be a big deal. Most blogs I read just kind of skipped right over it but Andrew and Colby both posted "The List" and now its my turn. We are going to keep updates on how it is going as the year goes on.

2008 was a great year. I would have to say one of the best ones yet. Well age 10 was the best year ever just because you are just at the point were you don't have responsibilities but you are old enough to have some fun and remember it. I'm thinking that 2009 will be another big one in my life. Not that I have anything huge lined up or know what I'm doing but it just feels like another productive year, as far as the career and myself.

Here is what I have in mind so far:
(no particular order)

1. Get a pet. The sign on the local pet shop here in Joplin says "pets make life better." So why would you not get a pet for 2009. I'm thinking along the lines of Ginnie pig.

2. Get to Dubai. Those of you who know me have a good idea of how bad I want to go here and have for years now. You need to click (here) and then you will also be booking a flight. It looks like it will set me back around $2,000 to fly there but then I can get a hostel for around $25 a night. It just needs to get done. No more talking about it.

3. Ride in a helicopter. I have love them for so long but have never been up in one. I don't care what kind or where but I have to do it. I wouldn't mind something like this (here) but I would also be OK with rolling in this (here)

4. Be more productive. I get to do and see what feels like everything but I have so much down time. This is time just spent sitting around on the Internet or drinking just one more cup of coffee. I want to be more constantly productive throughout the year. I want to put a camera in my hand everyday. Even if its just one photo, I need to be shooting everyday. I need to post more blogs, so thats something I can be working on too.

5. Do five documentary style multimedia pieces. Mediastorm.org is a great site to check out. The pieces here are just mind blowing. Please take a few minutes and watch one or two. "Common ground" is one of my all time favorites. This is where print media is going and the industry is calling for more stuff like this so I figure that I should jump on the band wagon.

6. Sell a print in a gallery.

7. Figure out what kind of photographer I am. Figure out what it is I like to shoot and do it. I don't want to be good at most, I want to be great at one. I will still shoot all kinds of stuff but I just want to have a main focus of interest.

Seems like the only topic of conversation lately has been, "awww man, did you see that weather." We (North Idaho) has just been getting hit with storm after storm. Heck 30 inches in 24 hours. I think we are over 60 inches now. Its hard to think that Joplin weather sounds good to me right now. Christmas was nice. Kind of the same thing we always do. Real low key being that its just my mom, dad and myself. I wouldn't have it any other way though.

I haven't been shooting very much. Feels nice to take a break for a bit. Trust me, I haven't stopped or lost any passion for it. I'm more fired up then I ever have been.

This would be a photo of my dog, buck. He seems to have changed the most out of everyone here. A little grayer and a little wiser. Wish I could take him back to Missouri with me. Don't tell him but I think I'm going to get a pet when I get back home. Don't tell my landlord either. Any ideas? I kind of want something with a personality (aka not fish again or a sloth).

I finally got some of my slides scanned from Mexico. I think they came out nice. I still need to shoot way more film to learn it a little better. I love the mindset it puts you when you are shooting with it. Very slow and thought out.

It's that time.

Well, I have made it back to North Idaho (home) for a month. It feels nice to be here and seeing some familiar faces around town. One thing that surprised me was how I miss Joplin already. Its hard to see all my friends and even not so good of friends and I feel like I have been missing out on so much and it would take forever to get up to speed on life in CDA. In my head I just thought that time stops when you leave a place but even just driving down the streets here and seeing new buildings and just think that people have been busy here. Don't get me wrong, there is no place I would rather be right now and when I say right now I mean it. Im back in Java, one of the greatest coffee shops I have ever been to. It feels like Christmas here. The family and I will be setting up the tree tonight.

I don't remember the last time I have ever felt weather this cold. It has been around -10 with wind chill since I got here. Sorry this post isn't stronger but the next one will be a good one. Lots of photos to come.

Well it's been too long between the last few posts but I'm back at it now. Nothing but time after next week. I spent Thanksgiving in Mexico with my buddy Nik and his family.

I have been somewhat mad at myself for not shooting enough film lately, so I figured that it would be a good trip to leave the digital at home and just take (this) and (this) with me.

I shot 2 rolls of medium format film 120 and one roll of 35mm.

I still need to get 2 of them processed but this is my first try at shooting medium format. I like the feel of the photos and I think they will get better the more I learn about the camera. I will post more when I get the others processed but in the mean time, I want to know what you think about it. leave me some feedback.

I was in Kansas City last week for a journalism conference and I'm planning on using that for my excuse as to why I have not been keeping up. The school work is getting a little deep again but I'm going to try and post lots for the next week or so. There are so many things that I want to talk about.

For this one I will just talk about the photo contest at the conference.

The goal was to shoot a portrait of Kansas City. A portrait doesn't mean it has to be a person just a photo that showed a story about the city. We had 24 hours to shoot one and then all the entries were judged by fellow shooters in the contest. I think there was 68 entries and I got 11th. Its not great but I was happy about it. I didn't go out looking for a shot I just had my camera with me.

I hate going to look for a photo. If you are looking for one it wont happen. Just let it happen it always will show up.

Hate power lines. Love that city

Sometimes I feel like I could just type on this thing for hours. Just ranting and going off about things, good, bad, funny and not so funny. Sometimes its what coffee can do to a person. well I guess I only know what it does to me. All day I have been in the mood that I get in after I drink a bunch of it and I haven't had any. Just kind of the thinking mood.

There was a girl hit by a car today at my school. When I hear about things like that it just gives me the chills. I mean it could be anyone of us. she was in a crosswalk just heading to class. She is going to be fine but had to go to the hospital because her arm went through the window and got cut up a bit. I'm not going to go into a big "live life to the fullest" because its been done 100 times but just be careful. Even if I have never met you and you are reading this you need to be careful also. It has the potential to be a short one, so just do your part to live it out.

I like this. Ill ask a friend for help on the next few posts. Topics if you will.

a topic for the blog.......how about how pathetic it is to idolize people just because they have money, but they have absolutely no character, morals, or intelligence
we were talking about that today in history...and it made me want to read more books and watch less TV.or talent really...i mean....why does the fact that you are good at sports mean you should make millions of dollars?

If we like it or not we are all bound very close to the dream of money. It doesn't even have to be lots of it. Right now the sound of stable finances puts a smile on my face. I cant complain too much because I'm the guy that hasn't had a solid job in some time. I know that people have been good to me. They have removed the burden of tuition costs and parents are always there for a little help. (don't think I'm a freeloader) I don't think that we should worship them for having money but i think that we should work hard/smart to have what we need and have enough to get out of the bracket that most of us are in. That would be the one that has the money hanging over our head all day long. The term "hard times" seems to be getting thrown around more and more. Its sad to think that I'm 21 and growing up to get put in this kind of live or die economy. I don't want it to be easy for me but I think there were times when dreaming big was easier.

No class till Wed. That sure feels nice. Andrew and I are out the door to St. Louis for the weekend. Our buddy Colby hooked us up with a floor to crash on. It will be a good trip just to get away and see some new scenery.

I have been working hard on a few projects that should be real good once they are done. Everything has to be in for all the internships at the big newspapers on November 1st. Once I get the portfolio done I'll post the link.

For now I will leave you with some dinner. I shot these photos about 10 months ago. It seemed like they were taking forever to cook. I found a bunch of fun old photos when I was going though all my stuff putting together the portfolio.

The right reason.

First off I have let you all know what I sold my soul to P.R. yesterday. I had to shoot 3 events for college relations and the alumni association and I'm not getting paid 1/3 of what I should be but when times are hard you must do what you have to do. Just know that I'm not changing majors because of it.

Something that has been getting at me is the question: why we do what we do?

I think I know why I do what I do but maybe there is something else driving me that I don't even notice. I don't shoot for the personal gratification of seeing people look at my picture or telling me, "Glenn That photo was great." Its to get people more information about whats happened or about to happen. That goes for my life and the assignments I shoot. That person or thing that I shoot get to have their picture in the paper. That's huge. To have people show their friends and talk about "Hey Amanda, did you see I was in the paper." better yet "Mom did you see i was in the paper." I could care less if they look at my credit for the photo. My work is done. She is happy and just that one girl probably showed 100 people maybe goes in the scrap book or the fridge. A few weeks ago one of my photos ran nice and big on the front page, previewing a play that would be happening on campus. When I went back to shoot the theater teacher for a feature they all thanked me because it was sold out ever night. Something that doesn't happen all the time. That's why I do it.

Its no secret that we are trying to gear up for ACP (Associated Collegiate Press) but for what reason? I guess I hate the idea of awards. It shows that most of the schools bust their backsides to show a bunch of judges that they know how to make the best paper or show them that one week they stepped it up and decided to do what should be done ever week or whenever you publish.

Is the newspaper for the judges? The faculty? the student body?

We should hold our standards higher then to not take every issue as important as the rest and pretend to be great for a few weeks of the year. I would hope that when I go see the doctor I get the same treatment that Brad Pitt gets. Every operation gets done to the doctors best ability.

Just do your job for the right reason. Love it, its what you do. I'm not saying to change jobs but just love what you do and for the right reasons.

Now to the fun stuff, my Birthday was on wed.

I have to get working on a resume.

James Nachtwey is one of my all time favorite photojournalist and he stands for everything that a journalist should. Him and TED will be breaking a huge story on Oct. 3. September Oktoberfest?

Saturday I went up to Kansas City with a new friend Brennan to cover the Oktoberfest. I will give a link to his story once it is published in the Weekend section in The Chart Friday. It was a pretty cool event. My witting wont do it justice.

I also got my new lens. Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II. Very fun piece of glass. I had to sell my 70-200 for it but well worth it. Part of it was a birthday present. (Thank you, I love it). I said a few posts back that I wanted to shoot all wide photos for a while and this is defiantly the right tool for the job. I'm not going to lie I do miss the big guy but this one is keeping me on my toes. I want to shoot a few more fun non-assignment photo and post those.

Going home for just the one day was great. I would have loved to stay longer but it was just enough to keep me going and not missing it that much. Nick Smoot hooked me up with the worlds best drink. Not even making that up. Shot a great wedding with Brady Campell. I'm not a huge wedding guy but I love to shoot with him because he just sets me loose and shoot what I see. I get to keep it real photo-j style. One thing I do like about weddings is that the couple are so happy together. Its nice to see. I have never shot a wedding where the couple have split either. Keep that in mind if you are looking to tie any knots in the near future.

In my head there is a list of guys you need to know and I got to hang out with most of them this past weekend.

How much longer till the drink cart will reach me? I just finished my bag of peanut butter chex mix and feels as if im making concrete in my mouth.

Im on my way back to CDA, Idaho for the weekend to help Brady Campbell shoot a wedding. Just a very quick trip but I think it will be just the right length to see whom I need to see and do what I need to do.

I love the idea of flying halfway across the country to do what I love. Love it. Im hoping that its not the last time I will have to fly to a shoot.

I talked with a friend from Houston, TX the other day. Had to make sure Ike didn’t get her. We were talking about the elections and then it lead into a chat about what kind of affect the "media" has on the public.

In my world the media has no affect on what the public thinks. People get the mass media and Hollywood, social influences, stereotypes all mixed up. I guess I get defensive about this subject because they aren’t all the same. (Just got my drink) The media is the news organizations. They all do there best to deliver you the most un-bias facts about a situation then its up to you to make up your mind about the information that you just received. Our job is to keep you up to date and to keep people accountable for their actions. We aren't the ones that give America the image of the perfect women. We don't tell what is becoming more acceptable in society. We give the facts.

Maybe that was a dumb rant.

I must tell the story about driving home from dropping Charlotte off in Tulsa on Tue. So im driving all slow like, just as I always do in the wagon when the gas light came on. Trust me, im no stranger to the gaslight. I know that I have about 50 miles or so till she is bone dry. So I figure I should start looking for one and as I drive past the worlds largest McDonalds I see the big sign that says "hey last stop 47 miles". Yeah, I missed the exit...

So im driving and I get to the construction zone where the road narrows with barriers on each side. You guessed it... its where I ran out. Its night, I’m out of gas on one of the busier highways in Oklahoma, alone and blocking traffic. I get it pulled off to the side just enough for the traffic to get around me. Long story but I’m there for about 45 mines and even when I did get the gas it wouldn't start.

The semi trucks had to scrape their wheels on the Jersey barrier to not hit me when they went past. So finally the state patrol car came along and pushed me for the next two miles to where the construction ended. He pushed me at what felt like 90 mph and sling shot me off about 7 or 8 times. Had there been an oversized load I would have made the worlds first convertible wagon. It would not have been good. Well it wasn't good anyways but someone up stairs was looking out for me that night.

1. Keep way to much gas in your car at all times.
2. Don’t live in the Midwest and that wont happen.
3. There is a God.

I hate this whole post once a week thing. Its just not working for me. I had a record day on Sept. 8, with 25 hits in one day. Kind of a big deal to me. I would hope that I continue to get more and more.

Charlotte has been in town, hanging out with me for a few days now. There must be some dedication there to leave Portland to come to Joplin. I have shown her how much it can rain here.

Hurricane Ike rolled though town last night. Lucky me, I was field side for 5 hours during the all famous Miners Bowl, the battle between MSSU (me) and Pitt State. This would be the 14th year in a row losing this game. 14-14 with 23 sec. left and touchdown... them. Here are a few of the photos of the game.

He is a little older then I am (born in 21) but a very talented man. If he should come your way I would say a definite must see. Here are a few photos form the show.

I would say once a month or so i get in a rut where i feel that i need all the new equipment and new gear to get done what i need to do in this profession. My camera just had its birthday, August 19, 2004. Four year old camera? seem old to anyone? I guess i could go into boring camera talk but to keep some part of interest i wont waste your time. I think that in all of us we think that we need the best of everything to do the tasks that we do. There is a point where your skills over-rule you equipment. Where is that line?

I think about my Father when this comes to mind. His lawn mover has seen better days and this was going to be the year that he through down for what he needed, i mean he has 3 acres at the house and another 10 at our property. Does this warrant a $3000 mover? I mean this might be the last one the he ever needs. I don't know what happened be he held off and spent maybe max $100 to have all the problems on the old mover fixed and now he couldn't be happier with how well it works. fishing is another story...Got to have the best there.

How this all relates to us? I want a new camera, i want new lenses. Camera is between $4500-5000 and the lens is $1400. Being a college kid do you think that here is anyway i have even a tenth of that money to spend on that? Answer is NO. Do i have enough money to be happy and live a good life? Answer is YES. When i first got into photography I had gone to my parents and asked them if getting this camera was such a good idea. Of course they gave me the goods and bads of this purchase. Would this be a fad? I spent $1400 on something i had no clue how to use. Best decision of my life so far.

I guess i don't know where I'm going with this. It feels like I'm just wanting something i don't need but 60% of me says that if you have all this then you can become the best but then Guys like Terry Richardson prove that wrong.

Right now i feel like i have done more with what i have then what most do with equipment better then mine. So that makes me happy but there is always going to be that dream of someday having the right equipment for the job. IE. Last nights football game. We will see what happens. Just keep making a name for myself in the industry.

Tomorrow will be the day the first paper comes out. Last night we (editorial staff) worked on in for quite some time. I think that it is a great team and every, well most, have a passion for journalism.
You cant have a production night without a little drama. On of my graphers is not so great with getting names... meaning we cant run that photo. Lots of butting heads with that part but we got it all settled. Yesterday was the first time i have come across curpt photos. There was a few keepers in there but they are long gone now. I would guess that it was my fault.
Writting sure feels like a bit of a burdon right now maybe its just the fact that im tierd or maybe because i have been doing way too much of it for history.

So i may need to clear up what i had said about shooting stock photos. I'm all about shooting and making money especially online, but to shoot for stock, that's what I'm no about. Shoot for you, shoot for the cause.

Maybe I'm just covering my but because i have a somewhat big announcement... I'm in. Ill continue to shoot what appeals me and then up load it and with fingers crosses maybe make some money.

Made it thought my first week of classes. Should be a good year. Not many distractions out here in middle America. All week the campus had events going on therefore i was able to keep busy shooting. Football a week from today. I'm not one for sports so much but i understand that it needs to be documented also.

I have spent too much time on the web this past week. I also feel that my knowledge for photography and journalism has doubled. I found a bunch of blogs that are a must read. One thing i was thinking about was stock photography. Its a way for photographers to put there photos on the web then people can buy them for whatever they want to do with them. Weather it be a billboard or a can of soup, magazine or newspaper. This is an industry that pulls in big money every year but looking thought portfolios of graphers that shoot stock i felt that something was missing. In order to make money at it you must have great images but they need to be commercial oriented. People don't want photos of the welcome week at school because it shows one school. They (buyers) want to show a school but not Southern. They want a couple holding hands but they don't want Charlotte and I. Generic photos are that they want. Get the point across but not in they way that anyone of us can connect to a photo.

I, Glenn Landberg, will never shoot stock photos for a website that will just clump my photo in with 3,400 other beach sunset photos. Mine is of CDA and that's why i took it. Be specific with shooting. Show why you took that photo. Document Document Document.

Last night I went with Andrew Ford (news editor) to an opening of a campaign center for Obama in Joplin. I was covering it for The Chart, MSSU's newspaper. Just to clear things up... I am not an Obama supporter. Its hard with journalism to stay neutral about political views in public but i think sense this is a personal blog i can say what i want. I'm a Ron Paul supporter and will continue to be. Enough about that. Foam party and mud wrestling at school tomorrow night on campus that i have to shoot. I want to start shooting just all wide shots. I'm not a huge fan of the lens that i have to use to do so but it really gets me in the action. Might be time to sell the telephoto lens. Its going to be my new goal to just take in my wide angle to a shoot and make it work. All the classes have been going real well. My history professor fell asleep during a movie he was showing us. If a man with a passion for pre 1492 history cant stay awake for his own 20 min movie you know its a bad one. Lets hope the Art teacher doesn't get me mixed up with the kid named Ben Glenn again also. Tell your friends about my my blog and i would like some feed back. Thank you for reading.

Big Day

It seems early to be starting school. Most years its not till early September But tomorrow is my first day. I feel as if i have had 1000 of these by now. No new clothes this year, same old shoes and still have the same backpack from high school but what is new is... well everything. I will be working for a new newspaper as the Director of Photography. there was a big freshman welcome today on campus that i shot and while out there with 1000 or so people i felt a little small and intimidated but as i started asking for Name, major, age, i found that most of the students were 18 and didn't know what they wanted to be and what they wanted to do. We are all in that same boat at some point in our lives. I don't think that its a bad time but i think that once you find out what you THINK you want to do that you should take some time and make sure. For myself it didn't just click one day BOOM...Photojournalist. I wanted to travel more then anything and i needed a way to help pay for it, so i figured that a camera was the best choice. Just like anyone else i wanted to take a nice looking picture. You never set out thinking, how can i make people look bad and make poor memories of a situation. Everyone has a sense for a nice photos. Back to it... 1.No one is cooler then you. Don't be overly confident but just know that to a degree we are all the same. Just do what you have to do. Use your words and you can own any situation. 2. Find what you want to do. Make sure it really is what you want to do and not some dream but then go for it. Things will start falling into place.

I figure that its about time I just tart getting my images out there and hope to get some people that will check in every so often. I would like to get into the habit of posting very regular but I don't want to set you up for something that may just let you down when i skip a day or two.
